austin by design is a community-wide series of events that celebrate design in both the built and natural environments. AIA Austin will bring together over 20 organizations to engage the public and demonstrate the ways that design can shape and improve daily life.

Click on the calendar button below for a month-long view.1. AIA Austin 25th Annual Homes Tour - October 1-2AIA Austin will be celebrating it's 25th Homes Tour this year! The tour, which has earned a regional and national recognition, is a great way to spend a weekend looking at great architecture. This year's self-guided tour will highlight 15 homes in and around Austin, TX. More info here. T, $2. Barkitecture - October 1Since its inception in 2005, Barkitecture has become an Austin favorite! Hosted by Animal Lovers of Austin, Inc., a 501(c)3 organization, and the 2nd Street District, this architectural dog-centric fundraiser showcases doghouses created by some of Austins best and brightest architects, designers and builders. Attendees will have the opportunity to bid on these unique doghouses, play at the 'pup-stop', learn more about adoption opportunities from local area rescue groups, and enjoy a Howl-o-Ween Fashound Show. More info here. E, K, Free3. Urbanized. A documentary film by Gary Hustwit - October 5Join director Gary Hustwit for a special Austin preview screening and post-film discussion. Presented in association with SxSW, AIGA Austin, IDSA Austin, AIA Austin, in conjunction with Austin x Design Month. More info here. M, $4. Heritage x Design: Alberto Garcia House Restoration - October 6Tour this Landmark home and learn about its recently completed pristine restoration and green updates from the Austin craftspeople who worked on the project. Evening will conclude with a reception. The house is located at 1214 Newning. Program and Tour from 6pm - 7pm. Reception from 7pm - 8pm. $15 per guest. More than Architecture - October 7From October 1 - 30, members of the Austin architecture and design community will display their creations amongst items of the permanent collection of the Fine Arts Library of the University of Texas at Austin. Works shall include designs, paintings, metalwork, sculpture, and furniture. A wine and cheese opening reception will be held Friday, October 7, 2011, from 5:00-8:00 p.m. More info here. E, F, K7. PERSPECTIVAS dosmil 11 Exhibit - October 7This design exhibit aims to showcase the work and talent of Austin Latino architecture and design professionals during the 2011 celebrations of National Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept.15-Oct.15). Design entries will be on display at the Mexican American Cultural Center, a one-of-a-kind facility dedicated to the preservation, creation, presentation, and promotion of cultural arts and heritage. Center for Maximum Potential Building Systems (CMPBS) Open House - October 7 CMPBS is a non-profit education, research, and demonstration organization specializing in life cycle planning and design. During Austin X Design, CMPBS will hold an open house featuring a tour of the organization's site and demonstration buildings led by Co-Directors Pliny Fisk III and Gail Vittori. Tour dialogue will focus on sustainability and eco-balanced design. More info here. T, F9. The Guild of Austin Artisans - October 7-9Austin's premier association of architecturally focused artisans, presents an exhibition of recent work in the Commodore Perry Mansion (41st and Red River) on October 7th-9th. The newly renovated mansion is one of Austin's landmark historic estates and serves as a physical testament to the value and legacy that such artisans have contributed to architectural design in the Austin area, and in this context The Guild will present work that illustrates how the tradition of skilled artisanship continues in the modern design arena. The Old Bakery Block Idea-Thon: Revitalization of Congress Avenue's Under-Utilized Spaces - October 8AIA Austin, in partnership with Downtown Austin Alliance (DAA), Alex Gilliam of Public Workshop, the City's Art in Public Places Program (AIPP), Austin Foundation for Architecture (AFA) and the City's Parks Department will host an interactive design workshop on the site of the Old Bakery on Congress Avenue. The event is designed to engage members of Austin's community - artists, designers, architects, city officials, business leaders and the general public - to generate new ideas toward a potential redesign of the block. Participants will build temporary structures to aide in the re-imagining of the area and share their vision for the block and surrounding areas. More info here. Free11. OFF THE GRID: Recharging Public Art + Design - October 8OFF THE GRID: Recharging Public Art + Design, a full-day symposium hosted by the City of Austin's Art in Public Places Program, will feature an intimate look at existing and future public art and design in the Seaholm District, a former industrial section of southwest downtown Austin that is undergoing a transformation into a vibrant urban neighborhood. A uniquely Austin adaptive reuse project, the Seaholm District serves as a model for sustainable urban revitalization nationwide. Panel speakers include Jana McCann, AIA, McCann Adams Studio; Greg Kiloh, Economic Growth and Redevelopment Services Office, City of Austin; and John Rosato, Southwest Strategies Group.The symposium will take place from 9:00 am 3:30 pm on Saturday, October 8, 2011 at the decommissioned Seaholm Power Plant located at the terminus of West Street at 3rd Street. Check-in and breakfast begin at 8:30am. REGISTER BY OCTOBER 5 here. Space is limited! Admission is $20 (includes breakfast and lunch). Parking is available in the surrounding neighborhood. AIA Austin Architecture in Schools Program BOX CITY - October 15 In celebration of Austin x Design, the Architecture in Schools program will host a Box City event at Pease Elementary on Saturday, October 15th (exact time is to be announced). Children learn about the design and construction industry by sketching designs for their buildings, requesting permits, and constructing those buildings out of cardboard boxes. Music in Architecture-Architecture in Music - October 19-21The Center for American Architecture and Design, in conjunction with the School of Architecture, the College of Fine Arts, and the Butler School of Music, presents Music in Architecture-Architecture in Music. This cross-disciplinary Symposium brings musicians, composers, architects, and scholars from around the world to explore the deep connections between the two arts through performance, installation, and academic research. The program includes collaborative performances between musicians/composers and architects who have created site-specific original music and architectural installations. UPtown DOWNtown Tour & Speaker Series - October 22The International Interior Design Association (IIDA) is proud to announce Austin's first-ever UPtown DOWNtown commercial interior design tour on October 22nd from 10am to 4pm. Tour locations range from sustainably designed projects like the Lance Armstrong Foundation and Lamberts Downtown Barbecue to offices for web marketing firms, Smiley Media and Whale Shark. Also included are offices for architectural firms, Gensler and GSC Architects and a medical office for Balcones OB/GYN. Many of the projects on the tour have received national and regional recognition and most are not generally open to the public. Attendees will learn about the ins and outs of commercial design and how the projects got from the beginning to the end. IIDA members, as well as representatives from each featured firm, will be present at each tour location to provide information and answer questions.$ 5 wristbands, which will admit you to all of the projects, will be available all tour locations on the day of the event. An after-party Happy Hour will take place at TAKOBA, on East 7th Street from 4-6pm. Lamberts Downtown Barbecue is also offering attendees a 25% lunch discount during the tour.
